Sullivans / Station 28
Known as the Sand Crab, this hundred year old bungalow had survived so many hurricanes that its frame was racked in multiple directions and the floors sagged and bounced. This renovation required the entire structure and its distinctive double fireplace to be elevated onto stable foundations, and the introduction of a properly scaled addition joined to the main house by a smaller hyphen and central stair. These new heated spaces and covered porches complemented the bungalow’s original configuration and allowed for its historic fabric to be extensively preserved– from the original french doors and double-hung windows to the deeply weathered siding. Due to these efforts, the project is now considered a “flagship historic rehabilitation” by the Town of Sullivans Island.
