The clients requested a traditional home with modern sensibilities on Sullivans Island.  Or maybe it was the other way around.  We started with a sensible floor plan, quality materials, and a judicious use of detail.  We ended on that big back porch with a cold beer in our hand, in no hurry to leave.

This was a historic renovation to an existing 19th century kitchen house under easement with the Historic Charleston Foundation.  The downtown property occupied an usually large lot that could accommodate both the addition of a small bay to the kitchen house as well as a new pool directly behind it.  The last piece of the puzzle was the mahogany pergola framing the view from the piazza.  The mortise & tenon joinery was executed by the timber framing instructor (and a few of his students) at the American College of the Building Arts here in Charleston.  That was something to watch.

This was the classic quandry.  The not-so-perfect house on the perfect lot in Charleston.  The clients requested that the alterations seem like a part of the original design.  After reconfiguring the kitchen to allow for a more spacious den overlooking the marsh, adding a new back porch, and a dozen smaller details, the clients said that they won’t ever have to move again.
